Long-Distance Travel in China: Flights, High-Speed Trains, and Buses

When it comes to long-distance intercity travel within China, domestic flights are usually the fastest option. For example, flying from Xi’an to Shanghai or from Chengdu to Beijing typically takes around 2–3 hours.

However, China’s extensive railway network makes high-speed trains (known as “high-speed rail” or HSR) an excellent choice for shorter trips, like Beijing to Xi’an or Hong Kong to Guilin. High-speed train stations are often closer to city centers than airports, and trains run at speeds of 200–350 km/h (124–217 mph). This means that for shorter distances, taking a train can sometimes be even faster than flying. Plus, while flight prices can spike during peak travel seasons, high-speed train tickets are more affordable and maintain stable prices throughout the year.
